I'm visiting in the country. What is a person supposed to do if they come upon a snake? I mean, what is the recommended action?

Give it space, it doesn't want to have to deal with you any more than you want to deal with it. Snakes do not attack people, and most will hide before you even get a chance to see them. Become familiar with the venomous snakes that may be in the area, and make sure to look at some decent pictures so that you know which ones to give more space to. Even these don't want to waste precious venom on you. You're not food.

If you see a snake DO NOT KILL IT! Snakes will only attack if they feel threatened and if you see a snake walk away slowly don't run (unless the snake starts to chase you which is VERY unlikely).

If the area is known for having many dangerous snakes then make sure you wear closed shoes and that you wear long pants if it is not too hot. A

Always be aware of where you are stepping and do some research on the snakes found in the area you are going so you can know what you might encounter on your journey.

Good Luck!

First realize that snakes like to stick to places they can hide in - tall grasses, rocky crags, and the like. Knowing this, just stick to the main paths of whereever in the countryside you are. Even then, if possible wear pants and solid top shoes (no flip flops). This is good for other reasons when out walking in the woods and what not, but it will prevent a spooked defensive nip of a snake from marking your skin should you walk by him and not see him. Otherwise, just use common sense - rattles are bad - walk away slowly, anything with a hood (think cobra head) usually is bad, walk away slowly. Also, bright colors are a good thing to avoid, as are bright green snakes. All of these aspects have non-lethal animals with similar distinctions, but for now - just be aware that snakes may be present, and if you see one, leave it alone.

If the snake's asleep, don't disturb him! Walk around once you see him. If a snake is moving, usually as long as you don't try to catch him, it will leave you alone! If you come upon a rattlesnake and it is coiled up rattling, don't make sudden moves, back up slowly at least 6 feet away before running (if you feel the urge). A snake can leap 1/2 to 3/4 his length. Rattlesnakes usually only do this when pushed to it or they are shedding. While shedding they can't see and rely on smell and heat.

Don't worry about snakes. They are not going to look for you. Just watch where you are going, if you see a snake leave it alone and don't panic. Walk away or around. Ask the local people that you are visiting about how to identify a dangerous snake (color, head shape). Have fun on your visit.

Now, as you vist make sure where you are standing. Snakes are defenders, they won't atatck for any old reason. If you find a snake. Do not go near it. If you want to do soem research on it. Stay behind a log or somthing. If the snake starts to shake its rattle, (if it has one) or if its showing somtihng that it doesn't like you, then walk away slowly. This is becuase the snake doesn't like you and it is warning you that it will bite you if you go near it. In other words, its angry that your there. Now, if you see a snake with the dangerous clours of warning, I think its red and black. Then don't even go near it. Just back off slowly. These colours are created by the snake to show you it will poison you if you even have anotihng to do with it. Don't go near these. You should be at least 3 metres away from a snake. If you wanna get past a snake. Go around it. But never too close. If a snake starts to chase you. try to get it distracted to somthing else. If tihs isn't working you muct run!! I hope this is useful for you and if you need any mroe informtion. Give me a shout-out.

Most snakes are only agressive when tampered with. You should slowly move away from the snake and then run if it isn't following you. Never mess with the snake or try to get close to it. Helpful Hint: Round head snakes aren't venemous, spade headed ones are.

If you will be camping, hiking, rafting, anything to put you in snake territory (well snakes are everywhere, but more common in these areas) I would go to the library and study the snakes indiduous to that area, learn the appearance of venomous/ vs/ non- venomous, I pay attention to striking distance when I come across one, move away from the snake.

Most people bitten by snakes are moletsing it or intruding in it's personnel space(stepping on it, trying to catch it, or trying to kill it) Poisonos snakes have arrow shaped heads and their eye pupils are like that of a cats, non-piosonus( unsure if spelling...lol) ones have a more rounded snought and round eyeballs. But I would recommend just leaving them ALL alone.

If you happen on a snake, go the other way.
