Most Viruses are designed to do one thing...Take over your computer! Yes, this also makes it slow...but the once the hacker gains total control over your computer he can use it for whatever he wants and take all the personal info he wants off of it too, like banks statements, credit card numbers, social security numbers , etc...that's why they make Viruses...

Why do people do other silly things to set world records?

To show that they can. If computer programming is your field of expertise, then creating something that can affect others is a momentous thing. As annoying as it is to you, the thing they did is not easy.
