It is sometimes referred to as "the K-T killer" because it marked the end of the Cretaceous (Krita) era and the beginning of the Tertiary era which is the geological era we live in. It was probably in the neighborhood of 10 km (6 miles) in diameter. Nowhere near the size of the moon. It didn´t just kill off the dinosaurs. About 65% of ALL life on earth died off...

The asteroid was never named, but the crater it left behind was, and it's a fun one to spell: Chicxulub Crater. It is located in the Yucatan Peninsula, which separates the Carribean Sea from the Gulf of Mexico. It was only thought to be 10 km in diameter, but its impact had an energy of about 5 x 10^23 Joules, which is millions of times more energy than the largest bomb detonated. It has been dated to 65 million years, coinciding with the extinction of the dinosaurs (the Cretaceous - Tertiary boundary).

Since it was 65 million years ago, there was nobody around to give it a name. And we don't know exactly how big it was -- only that it made a hole about a hundred miles in diameter.

I don't think it had an official name but I believe the dinosaurs first called it 'Big shiny thing in sky" but eventually replaced this with its official name

"Oh SH*T!!!"

Or some derivation on that theme

I don't think it has been named. I propose that it be named after me, but that might not happen.
