I watched the movie "Hostel" and no offence to anyone in Europe, but it has seriously scared me out of going.

Are hostels real or was that just made up for a movie?

Also: I've always wanted to go to France, are there hostels there?

Youth hostels are all over the world ( even in France) and they're clean, inexpensive and fun. When I was backpacking I stayed in Hostels in Israel, Europe, England and Scotland and had a great time, met a lot of interesting people and would do it again if I were younger. The ONLY caution is to make sure you check ANY valuables with the receptionist, since, unfortunately, there are people who do steal stuff. Other than that, it's a great way to see the world on a shoestring. Enjoy!

Yeah. I don't know how many people I've met abroad who are afraid of coming to the US because, from the movies they've watched, they think that as soon as they land in the United States, they'll be mugged, beaten, raped and probably shot. Most likely by a teenaged pregnant black Mexican drop-out hip hop artist on drugs.

I'm living in China now, and most Chinese people I know here love to watch Prison Break and Desperate Housewives. They have a real skewed perspective of America.

The movie Hostel is a good horror film, but you're as likely to be sold to a group of sadists after staying in a European hostel as you are getting cut up by a chainsaw in Texas.

Yes, hostels are quite real. Maybe not as the movie portrayed them to be, but they are real. I have spent many nights in them while traveling all across Europe. Also, as to answer your last question, there are lots of hostels in France. Check out:

No, everyone is lying to you to get you into one so that they can do to you what happened to that guy in the movie. That wasn't fake!! That was a travelogue. Stay in the US with your Mommy!!! It's the only safe place for you. Europeans are all cannibals--or worse!!

I mean, come on! Civilization doesn't begin and end at the shores of the US. Come to France, and the rest of Europe and see what a fantastic place it is. I've been living here on and off for the past decade and I can't get enough.

Hostels do exist... but the ones in the movie exist ONLY in the movie.

Yup. Apparently, they have them all over. I stayed in one in San Fransisco. You don't always have to pay, sometimes you just take care of your room or clean or donate money.
