my 12 year old neice likes to catch her farts in her hand and smell them...is this normal?

ok well i was reading the answers to this question and i feel the need to correct practically everyone on here.

this was not a dumb question, just badly worded. the question should not have been "is this normal" but instead "should i be concerned."

the answer is no, i use to do it when i was a kid. me and my little cousin both. we learned it from my aunt (her mother) she never actually did it but joked about it so one day we decided to try it. ones own farts do not normally smells as bad as someone elses. you dont fart in a room by yourself and run away because the smell is not very appauling to you because it came from you. you dont crap and then flee from the bathroom gagging but if someone else is in there they might.

the fact that your neice is sniffing her own farts just means that she is either going through a stage or she is just comfortable with herself (and this is how she subcoinciously chooses to show it) or she is rebelling but i would look for more rebellious signs befor you come to this conclusion. you do not need to take her to a phychiatrist she will be fine.

my advice is to tell her that, its weird and that you know she is doing it. remeber your not her dad you are her uncle so you should act more as a friend. i hope this helps.

and for the record, i have no mental issues, i have never been diagnosed with and mental disorders, not even ADD, nor have i been told i should be checked out. i dont have trouble getting a boyfriend or date either. none at all. not to mention the fact that your neice should NEVER be told to do or dont do something because "boys wont like her" do not degrade her by telling her this. it makes it seem like there is not more to life than boys. find a better excuse.

One time this little girl in the waiting room at the hospital was doing that. She must have ate something nasty because she just kept ripping @ss! I could smell them too, and I started gagging. I ran over to the fountain and puked. True story, it was gross.

If I were you I would tell her to stop it because it's gross, and tell her that no guy will want to be her b/f if she does that. Kids will be kids, they're always coming up with weird, and sometimes downright disgusting, things to do. Good luck! :)

Maybe she's reaffirming some control over her bodily functions?

Her parents might want to have this peculiar behavior looked into.

Omg...my little sister used to do that with a glass jar. (She was known for her farts.) When her friends moved back to Gerogia, she mailed them one of her farts in a jar. It still stunk when they opened it up in Georgia...since then they called her Fart Blossom...

Lol. My husband and I are adults and we dont like to smell them. However we do like to catch them and throw them in each others noses.

We both hate it when the other one does it. lol
