I think we should have a holiday to celebrate when our ancestore were freed from slavery in the US. If so, how could we get this done? Ideas?

Micheal, thanks for your input, I am aware that the war was not fought in general to free the slaves, but I am greatful for the freedom for my ancestors and still think that the US is better for having lived up to it's constitution concerning freedom and liberty for all.

Hello
I do not know what there is to celebrate here. Lincoln needed more troops from the North and many did not want to fight so he used this proclamation to stir up more people to join his northern armies. Slavery was not the issue that started the civil war many sources claim and if it had been the reason then it was probably the most senseless waste of human life in the 19th century because mechanized machinery appeared within one generation of the war and would have rendered slavery totally useless and uneconomical since a steam shovel, tractor or combine could do in a day what a hundred laborers could do in a week.
The reconstruction era contributed a lot more to racial division and animosity than the civil war and this clearly illustrates that Lincoln had no plans or cared diddly squat about the fates of the freed slaves, their health, education and livelyhood.

Michael Kelly

There is already a national observance of the Emancipation Proclamation. It is called Juneteenth. I am surprised you did not know that.
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.
From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.
Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long over due. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society.

My apologies, OP...I did not realize races other than African American were excluded. However, I would like to point out that the website I quoted considers Juneteenth a world wide celebration and calls themselves the National Registry for Juneteenth Organizations and Supporters. That should be "National" enough for anyone.

Isn't that what Juneteenth is? I know the history behind Juneteenth is the story of the slaves in Texas and outlying areas finally hearing the news, but hasn't it become a general celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation? But I definitely think it should be emphasized more. (Yikes! Nothing like a good question to bring the racists out of the closet)!

WHY WOULD YOU CELEBRATE A POLLITICAL MOVE MADE BY A PRESIDENT TO KEEP eNGLAND OUT OF THE AMERICAN WAR?
(sorry caps lock was on)
i would say that you should celebrate people like MLK and Rosa Parks that really dod something for your freedoms. because after the way you might have been free. but were not accepted. or even tolerated in many communities.
MLK and Mrs, Parks did much more for your people.

Why does your culture always seem to be looking for holidays? You already have A WHOLE MONTH to celebrate your culture. "Black history Month". White people don't have a whole month to themselves. Hispanic people don't have a whole month to themselves. Asian people don't have a whole month to themselves. All I seem to hear out of your race is "want, want, want". Stop looking for days to get out of work!
