Marble is recessive and I do know what I am talking about. Any trait that does not completely assert it's self over other traits is not labeled as the dominate trait in that set. The only problem with that statement when it comes to betta genetics for color and pattern is that they are dictated by many different genes. To get a good marble you must have the proper pieces in place in most of those gene sets. Luckily for you, pattern usually follows more closely to the female while color follows to the male. Is that good in marbles? Yes and no, but it increases your chances of getting marble fry. I would expect you will see the majority(62.5%) of the fry with a marble pattern of some type, but only a small minority (about 3.75%) to show a quality marble pattern. Of course, these number do include the entire batch of eggs, even those that don't hatch, the fry are deformed and those fry that don't live so it's very possible to see no remaining quality marble fish by the time they get their color.

Recent studies done following the late Dr. Lucas' work in betta genetics have shown marble pattern to be recessive to all other patterns because it requires so many different pieces to be in place to show up well in a betta. There is no pattern known that is recessive to marble. Also, because it does require so many genes to be perfect to show up in the fish, it is also the least stable of all patterns. One out breeding (like you are doing) can "muddy" the marble pattern for at least 5 generations, probably more.

There is no chance your solid male "carries" marble without it showing some.

There is no chance butterfly will come from the fry as butterfly and marble are from different pattern groupings.

cant tell you exactly without knowing what these two's parents were.
however, marble is partly dominant (not actually dominant, not actually recessive)... this means patterns are for the most part unpredictable.

they work like some flowers (snapdragons, if you know what they are), unlike normal genetics, it gets a little complicated.

generally speaking, you will get at least 3/4 solid fry. IF the solid parent carries a marble gene, the marble amount of fry will increase.

theres also the chance that the solid is a marble, but you just cant see it. in which case you will get solid (both light and dark), marble and butterfly fry.

anyone who tries to tell you marble is either dominant or recessive doesnt know what they are talking about.
