For a more sophisticated (and individual) look don't match - coordinate the pieces. If you have a tie and/or shirt you like with the jacket, visit a men's store or department and ask for help coordinating a pocket square. A sales person should be able to help you find something in a color and pattern that accentuates the pieces you have while giving a bit of personal style!

I would have it match a color in the tie, but not if it's a bold tie. If the tie is black or a solid color with white dots or specks, then i would say a white pocket square...what's a pocket square anyway? i'm assuming that's like a handkerchief, right? whatever it is, it has to be subtle, you just want it there to break up the monotony of the black suit, not to stand out and overshadow the entire ensemble...does that help?

Usually, it looks best if it matches the tie - it emphasizes a small part of the ensemble. Collect ones that match ties, or solids that coordinate with your ties or shirts.
Second best would be the shirt.
Don't match to the suit - no one will even know it's there!

It would look best to match the tie if you want anything to match.

It always looks better if it matches the tie.

I personally think it matches better with the shirt!

Not really. I find sometimes the contrast is better. Too many people do that and I think it looks rather bland.

it should match the tie.
if you have a design on it, pick a color that is less prominent.
it will make that color stand out more.
&&&you'll be lookin` FLYY!!!
