I would think that they mean do you really like something firm, or are you just into playful "love taps" during kinky sex. Just because someone says "I like spanking" doesn't mean that they understand the ramification of what they're suggesting.
If you hear "spanking" and think of some guy swatting your backside while he rides you doggystyle, then you don't like "spanking." You like kinky sex.
