What does the yellow back refer to.Does your back get yellow when yous cared?

It is actually yellow-bellied coward. There are many different theories on the origin of this saying.

Back in the day they use to say if you were a coward, you had a yellow stripe down your back. So the term yellow backed coward was coined.

Pretty sure it's yellow BELLIED not backed...
This is a very old saying... and many people have tried to come up with the reason behind it but there is nothing definitive.
