If it happens again, lay charges of assault against him. Hopefully, his girlfriend will also see what a loser this guy is, and dump him. With even more luck, she will dump him for you, and you can return to your guitar lessons with renewed vigour :)
Make some beautiful music together.
And if all else fails, have him attend the guitar lessons, and break the farrkin guitar across his empty head.

It is possible to defend yourself without having to fight. Just protecting yourself is fine. But if you feel he could have injured you, you should do what is necessary to prevent that. Using a form of restraint, at the very least, was probably what you should have done.
Saving face, or your pride, is childish. It usually leads to greater violence or more fighting.
Taking a few punches is ok and very cool, but there needs to be a limit to what your opponent thinks he or she can get away with.
Your not a coward because you choose not to fight. A coward will hide and avoid all confrontation.
It could be said that you were, in fact, acting bravely in the situation, but I think you know it's more than that. You were just smarter too.
I think we learn the most about ourselves when we are under real pressure with the adrenalin flowing.
I know I have. Wonderment.....I like that word.

If you are letting someone hit you 5 times in the face before you do anything .You My Friend are STUPID he could have possibly blinded you or hit you in the throat which can crush your wind pipe or knocked out teeth or broke your jaw any of these are a seious problem you are niether showing bravery nor calmness I take it as you possibly froze You should defenitely not fight anymore as you could run into someone that is truly mean or good at fighting at which time you will need an ambulance.I served in Vietnam and I saw boys over there freeze from firing their weapons they were not brave but usually dead.
Love not war for you brother

I wouldn't say brave or coward. I would say you were unmotivated to participate in his issues.
You are right that jealousy is 'his' issue and it is rooted in his own feelings of lack.
You may want to ask yourself if you felt you deserved this in any way. Because if you were allowing yourself to be pummelled out of guilt, you may want to re-evaluate that strategy.
Either way, by your account it worked out well, so that can be a comfort.

personally, i'd say be a little more cautious next time about doing things like that. i'd say teaching a girl how to play can arguably be a romantic thing. i'd probably feel a little threatened if some random guy was teaching my girlfriend to do that.
