You should ALWAYS leave your baby rear facing until he is 20 lbs AND 12 months old. The cervical spine is not mature enough to hold the babies head up until they are 12 months old. If your baby is already 20 lbs and you are using a carrier type car seat then you may need to change to a convertible type car seat. Please read the weight/height requirements on your particular seat....they are listed in the owner's manual and usually on the side of the seat. For more information go to www.usa.safekids.org.

He has to be rear facing until he is one year old. They are now saying to keep your babies rear facing for as long as possible, because it is safer.
If your son weighs 20 lbs (depending on the model) he probably has outgrown his infant car seat. You will have to buy (or borrow) a convertible car seat that can be used rear or forward facing.

EclipsePearl has it right! You want to leave your baby rear facing AS LONG AS POSSIBLE PER THE SPECIFICS OF THEIR SEAT!

For example, my daughter is 22 months and 23 lbs. However, our covertible car seat says she can rear face in it until she's 35 lbs or 35 in. whichever comes first. I FULLY intend to leave her rear facing until she reaches one of those marks.

Remember, that every time a kid moves up to the next seat or way of sitting, it is NOT a promotion. It's actually a DEMOTION in safety. Rear facing is always the safest!

Please do NOT turn your child around to forward facing until one year. I would even go longer if I were you. Their bones are not fully developed and they are much better protected facing backwards.

Consider buying your next carseat so that you can continue to have him facing backwards for as long as possible and then when he turns forward, you can keep him in a 5 point harness as long as possible as well. Britax and Radian are two brands that come to mind. Look into the Recaro, which is coming out this year. Buy a seat that harnesses past 40lbs to best protect your precious baby!

I put a bunch of links on this subject below. The You Tube video has some pretty convincing crash test footage. If that doesn't convince you...

The American Association of Pediatrics and the National Highway Safety Association each say 12 months AND 20 pounds.
