Why is it that when people say "freedom isn't free" they are insinuating that the "price" of freedom is giving up freedom. I say, the price of freedom is tolerating insecurity. Sure, some of us may be affected negatively, but weren't all men and women who DIED protecting our freedom tolerating insecurity? It seems to me, the true patriot is the person who is willing to accept some danger for the sake of freedom rather than the person who is willing to forsake our Constitution and Bill of Rights in the hopes of gaining safety.

Will S: you misunderstood my comment/question. My point is this: To HONOR men and women like YOU (who risked life and limb for our freedom) the rest of us should tolerate a little danger rather than be willing to give up freedom in the name of safety.

To "g": Well said. That is exactly my point. The Patriot Act insults every soldier who died for freedom!

To "Mumbo": Agreed. (And 1984 is a favorite of mine. It should be required reading before a person gets to register to vote...lolol)

As Benjamin Franklin said:

Those who surrender essential Liberty for a bit of Security deserve neither!

Freedom is purchased with vigilance, danger, toil and blood.

Another great man said something to the effect that:

Only slaves have security. To be Free is to be in danger. Free Men must safe guard their Liberty with eternal vigilance. And be prepared to pay for their Liberty with blood.

imagine any previous empire like the Aztecs, Persians or the Romans and examine the probable treatment of the middle and lower classes...they certainly were controlled by some religious or nationalistic notions. Is it any different today? Are we being used through an artificial system to support the upper classes and kings? Has the media and its pundits taken over the role of the priests...

In older nations, such as the Mayans or Aztecs, they calculated the eclipses and used them to show their
"knowledge of God"...are we being controlled in a similar way? I try to look beyond the words to see the truth, but it's a dark place....Is there a truth?

I belive the founding fathers of this country could see an ultimate truth. I believe in the great document they created. But our leaders need to believe in it as well

The price that was payed for your freedom is in the sentence above. Those people who have given up their civil rights, freedom, served in the military, and sometimes given up their lives to protect your rights and ensure that you have them. That is the cost of freedom.

Scare tactics employed by our Goverment and the mass media have rendered the American Citizenry cowards. Fear is than manipulated to promote laws that will ensure "saftey" at the cost of civil liberties.

This is the main theme from Orwells 1984.

What would our founding fathers think of our Military tribunals, Guantanamo Bay, FISA, and the Patriot Act?

What will our founding leaders think when only 20% of the congress actually ever reads legislation before voting on it?

What will our found fathers think of our politicans and their corporate sponsors?

......... Such a shame to lose this democracy or whatever is left of it (currently it is believed to be a plutorcracy by many social scientists) Democracy can only survive with an intelligent and reasoning citizenry.

freedom of press, discussion and thought but not freedom of actions. Nobody should harm others. You have the right to drink alcohol but you cannot drive car with alcohol.

unless that danger is so great that the freedom becomes impossible.

Are all the laws, but one, to go unexecuted, and the government itself to go to pieces, lest that one be violated?

It means that we may have to make personal sacrifices to protect the freedom of our fellow countrymen, and others if necessary.

I whole-heatedly agree. Our government has proved time and again that they cannot protect us. Bureaucracy has cost the American people dearly, from failing to share intelligence on the 9/11 terrorist plots to the mess dealing with hurricane Katrina. So we should give up our constitutional rights and trust that "big brother" will take care of it all... I don't think so.

freedom isn't free deals with sacrifice, mainly of life. it doesn't deal with sacrificing freedom by having the gov't listen to the phone calls of terrorists. that is not near the same sacrifice as soldiers make
