I've been thinking for a few months that I'd like to follow in my father's foot steps...he rescues abused and neglected farm animals and rehabilitates them for use in his free neighborhood petting zoo...I was raised rescueing and rehabilitating animals with him and now that I'm 18, a high school grad with a full time job, I'm looking to start college...pick a career...I don't want to be rich or famous but I want to make a difference in the world around me during my lifetime...I couldn't be a vet or an animal cop, although I'd like to I just don't think it's right for me...I thought about opening up a no-kill shelter but have no clue how to and I've been told that's something you lose money on (I may not want to be rich but I do want to be a home owner)...I loved what my dad and I did together but it was a hobby not a career...I thought maybe taking this class might help me decide what to do in life:

1. The PetCo course won't do much that a good book won't cover.

2. If you want a good pet first aid course, try the Red Cross class- they let you play with manikins to practice CPR, etc. Hands on is always better- and the price is similar!

3. Get experience away from home. Shelter, pet shop, zoo, whatever. "Try before you buy"- use your first years in college to just plain be around animals. It will help your resume and help you figure out what you really want.

You can't go wrong with the curse - I wish all pet owners did that course.
Go and speak to people who run shelters of various kinds, that's the best way to find out what is suitable for you to do.
