What was the main religion of Iran before the 1970's? Anyone know any history on it?

Persia (modern Iran) was conquered by the Muslim empire in 652, just 20 years after the death of Muhammad. Iran has been a Muslim country since then although it has had some secular governments. The largest minority religion in Iran is the Baha'i Faith.

Yes. The second Persian empire was one of the first casualties of the rise of Islam. Note that there are a great many secular muslims in Iran, as one of the people who responded here hinted at, but they typically do not like to make that well known until they leave Iran.

I think it was Iran before 1979 . Its religion was muslim

As our friend dirk_vermaelen told Iranian was Muslim since 2nd half of the 7th century and I know the name of country is Iran for more than 2500 years.

Iranians apparently were muslims before revolution and after revolution but if want true we are not real muslim we only claim.

yes, and it had been since the arabs conquored it (2nd half of the 7th century. Before that, it was zoroastrianism/mazdaism.

Persia was more western orientated, more into modernisation.
