It is a rhythmic thing. If you count the guitar riff it is in 3/4 yet the drums are in regular 4/4 so the downbeat of the kick drum turns around on it's self and the accents are on different counts of the riff.
ONE, two, three, one TWO, three, one , two , THREE, one, two, three, ONE, two, three, etc.... It is very clever.
Rhythmic patterns can be very hypnotic and alluring - just look at the long extended solo of "Light My Fire" by The Doors where the drums play a 3/4 against 4/4 rhythm. This is a rhythm that is used in Peyote ritual when the Shaman is going into his trance. The Doors didn't know this, they just thought it was a cool thing to do.
Kashmir has that Eastern, melodic, element also.

It is a great song. I wish there were more songs like it....

Joe put a great answer... and that's right. People say drummers are stupid, haha yeah right. And of course the orchestra with it sounded amazing. And I like what you put, the feeling of being in a weird room all alone... it really does have that kind of weird affect.

I adore modern rock to death, but there really isn't the same great music that bands had years ago... there aren't a lot of bands today that are half as original as Led Zeppelin. They're the greatest band ever, no doubt.

Ahhh, I LOVE that song. Led Zeppelin is my life. :o That's probably my favorite song by them.

I was reading something about it once. Some guy on a blog said:

"It's like the sand blasted the notes onto a tablet and dropped it in Page's lap."

I don't know, I just thought it sounded cool.

I don't appreciate Plants single stuff though. Jimmy Page was hot hot hot hot.
Kashmir takes the cake. If it was done by another band, it wouldn't be so amazing. The band definitely makes the song.

the Zep made it, of course it's awsome
I think it's the orchestra that makes it so spooky, and Plant's voice. He sings differently here than in say, Houses of the Holy.

It's either the orchestra or the massive amounts of acid that Led Zeppelin probably dropped before playing it! Ha! Just kidding! (kind of) I love that song!!!!!!!
