It really depends on the baby and how much you encourage him/her. My friend’s baby started at 6 month. I saw a baby do it at 4 month. I have a 7.5 month old and she does not do it. She can hold things fine, drinks and holds her sippy cup, holds her bottle of water but when it comes to the bottle with milk she just likes to have her hands free to do things with them. Our ped said that it was normal she just does not want to hold it. You can encourage your baby by giving her to hold the bottle after the feeding and gradually let her do it on her own when she wants to eat. If she does not want to don’t worry they won’t need it in few month anyway.

Generally about 5-6 months. It all depends on how you hold the baby and what inticement he/she has to become more independent. Lay him/her along your lap/legs so that you may give more attention to stroking his/her head/body.

Granted, this age child is not great at it. So, don't assume he/she will be able to truly care for him/herself.
