Hatshepsut (1473-1458 BC) lived in a time when women were allowed to own property and hold official positions. It was a also a time when the royal bloodline had to be preserved, so relative often married relative. She did wear a false beard and other male attire, possibly to make herself appear more masculine. Her end is still a mystery.

The reason she was depicted with the beard is very academic.

The beard is a symbol of PHARAOH. Since she ascended the throne, she ordered that her images depict her with a beard, and all the power that came with it.

Hatsheput's successors tried to destroy all record of her because of the age-old reasons: to destroy the fact that a woman was ever Egypt's head of state, or ever ascended to godhood (Pharaoh=god.) But they failed, as this thread indicates. Hatsheput's name lived on and has been spoken out loud throughout the ages, perpetuating her immortality. This is the greatest honor to an ancient Egyptian.

Look up some of the History channel DVD's, they cover her history pretty well.

After Queen Hatshepsut died, her successor did his best to destroy all record of her existence. Why he hated her so much is unknown. It may well be that she was ahead of her time and made the male rulers look bad or, alternatively, she may have been so bad that everything was destroyed to help people forget her (as was done to some degree with Stalin and more recently with Saddam Hussein)

Scholars debate why she wore a false beard. It may have been that she needed to appear to be a man in order to hold the office. However, some of the male Pharaohs apparently wore false beards, too, so it may have been part of the ceremonial attire or regalia required.

5,000 years ago would have put her around the time of the first dynasty. Try 3,000 years ago.
