Me and my friend's are trying to settle a dispute about who had more territory at the peak of their power: The Axis Powers (not counting Japan) or Napolean and his allies. I say Napolean, and he says The Axis Powers- who's right?

Napoleon at thehight of his power controlled France, Spain, Belgium, A large part of Italy and much of North Africa. There were also colonies in Indochina, Central and eastern Africa, Tahiti, French Guyana, and the Grand Manan Islands, and not to be forgotten The Louisiana Territory which he sold to the US, a pretty hefty bit of real estate, but remember that the Vichy Regime came UNDER the Axis powers, and pretty much all of North Africa, apart from Egypt fell. We're not talking Axis vs. Allies, Napoleon never conquered Russia either, but pretty much all that France had the Axis had and more.

Napoleon ....
controlled France, Italy, modern day Germany, Austria, the low countries, Slovokia/Hungary, the Balkans, Poland, Spain/Portugal, and parts of Scandanavia. He never controlled Eygpt or Russia even though he invaded both and came close to taking them. Basically, Napoleon controlled all of Europe except for the U.K and I believe Switzerland.

Axis Powers (excluding Japan and it's territories)....
All Europe excluding Spain and Portugal (which were technically one-step away from being allies of the Axis powers) . Nazi Germany basically took out every Contennetial country except for Italy and Switzerland. Of course the U.K. stayed free and resistant. Nazi Germany also took control of Egypt and parts of North Africa touching the Meditterean Sea. Also, Nazi Germany invaded Russia, and for a brief period controlled a large swathe of Russian territory. Germany also controlled colonies in Africa. Italy, although far weaker than Germany, did invade Ethopia and control it.

Most important sidenote, Nazi Germany with it's submarines and navy did have a foothold and control of a few sea areas. Of course the British navy was the ultimate warrior in this arena of battle, the Germans did have a respectable prescene. Napoleon's Navy was not as fortunate or respectable.

I don't have a total land count in terms of square miles, but I kind of get the impression that the Axis Powers had more land under their control than Napoleon did at the apex of his career.

The Axis powers

Napoleon had France, Spain, Portugal, the Low Countries, Italy, and much of Germany, part of Poland, and a little bit of Russia.

Hitler had Germany, Austria, France, the Low Countries, Denmark, Norway, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and much of the Balkans. His ally, Mussolini, had Italy and Albania.

So the Axis powers had the larger territory.

The allies clearly have more territory. Once the USA becomes involved, the Axis has nothing on them. Do not forget Soviet Russia, which is almost larger than the whole rest of Europe put together.

It's not the Axis powers with out Japan, then you have only Germany and Italy, which was the fascist Alliance not the Axis powers. Anyways, it is a poor argument, i twas Hitler with France, Germany,Austria,Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia,Romania, Eastern Soviet Union, Poland, Denmark,Netherlands,Spain,Italy,Sicily,Norway,Finland, Greece. Nazi germany at it's peak power in Russia ruled 900,000 sq miles, and claimed 400,000 in Antartica (???). Napoleon at his peak controlled just under 800,000 sq miles about half of Hitlers, and thats leaving out the 325,000 controlled by Italy (axis power) Algeria,Egypt, . Napoleon never controlled much of Russia, he mad a bee line to Moscow and failed, Hitler actually did control most of eastern Russia for well over 28 months of the war. he to was defeated in forced in retreat from the Soviet Union.

The Axis had much of Europe, large parts of Northern Africa, and The French colonies. This was much large than Napoleon's conquest. And if you add Japan, you have to add China, the Philippines, and the outer Aleutian Islands, just on our doorstep.
