unfortunately a contract is a commitment and you wont be any plans without that. however, try prepaid, ALL companies carry a prepaid version, and just like other phone companies you need to shop and look around. some offer free minutes, or weekends, and some text messages. my best advice is look at every ones website and see what is best for you, and annoying sales people. unfortunately they get commission for prepaid so i suggest do a lot of independent research then go to the stores to ask the big unclear questions.

I don't know about Nextel but I do know about TracFon because I have one. Prepaid phones are great. No committment. You can buy a TracFon at Target or online and other places. For $100 online I got a flip Motorola refurbished and 450 minutes of time. I can buy more time if I want or never use the phone again. They have "minutes " like mine that are good for one year. They have minutes good for 30 days, 45 days, etc. Look online and see all the deals for TracFon and also google other providers who sell prepaid cell phone time. Many provide a free to low cost phone, but these are not phones with all the bells and whistles. Nice part is there are not added charges. TracFon has a no-roaming one like I got. If you run out of time, the phone goes dead, you lose the number, but down the road you can buy more time.
