What's with all the paper needed to get United Healthcare to pay for breast reduction? I was asked by my plastic surgeons office for more letters from my doctor and OBGYN regarding letters stating medical necessity. Is this normal? I already had them send their chart notes. They are all giving me a hard time getting a letter. Though they all agree that I need a reduction from my 44DDD or larger to a C cup. Do these insurance companies really think it is cosmetic? Pictures of my enormous ones and the rash and indentions aren't enough? A colleague had it done with the same measurements as me and she didn't need anything to get covered by United Healthcare. Any incite to this is greatly appreciated.

I had no issues with mine and I have UHC (I didn't even need letters from doctors or weight loss or anything like that! Just pictures the PS took), but different plans have different requirements.

Bug them till they get a letter out to the insurance company/PS.

Good luck!

Yes, it is cosmetic surgery.

You want to get rid of those big boobs, but lots of women pay big bucks to get boobs that big.

Cosmetic surgery is considered to be elective, and insurance companies will not pay for them UNLESS, your doctor gives them good medical reasons that you need the surgery for health reasons, not cosmetic reasons.

Sorry if I am sounding cold, but my wife is going through the same crap. I am just trying to explain the situation.

So, if the insurance company is giving you a run-around, and I know they are, put spurs on your boots, climb on your doctor's back and stay there until he files all the paperwork with all the "I's" dotted and "T's" crossed.

Good Luck!
