I want to make friends with my art teacher who is also my assigned advisor...how do i make friends with her? Do teachers make friends with students? I'll technically have 2 classes with her out of 4 everyday for the next two years so i think we ought to be friends...would you teachers give me some feedback please? :)

Out of curiousity, what is the hardest part about being a teacher?

First of all, how old are you? Being friends with a student is a risky situation for teachers in public schools, grades K-12. Eventhough teachers may really like students, they have a professional responsibility to treat all their students in an equal manner and to show no favoritism. If you are a college student, I can only say that treating your art teacher/advisor with courtesy and respect is the best approach to a good teacher/student relationship. I would aim for mutual respect rather than friendship. Teachers are often wary(and rightly so) of students who want to treat them as their peers.

Teachers used to be able to be "friends" with student(s) but, with accusations of improper activities, most teachers have been forced to erect a "barrier wall" to avoid lawsuits. Therefore, accept that there will be a distancing and act accordingly. A teacher has to act in a "professional" manner. Just act in a friendly manner (but not overly friendly manner as this will scare off the teacher) and give the teacher no grief and do not expect a gushing response. You would be surprised at the results. You would be surprised what the effect of a friendly good-morning (or afternoon) and smile can be. In addition, teachers can often smell-out students who are doing things for an alternative motive.

What grade are you in? This can be precarious for teachers. While we want to have good relationships with our students and to be friendly, it's not necessarily advisable for us to be "friends" with our students because of the perception of favoritism. A relationship will build naturally. Don't rush things. If your teacher is a little stand-offish, don't take offense. She may just be trying to keep her professional objectivity. Good luck to you.

well, i'm not a teacher, but i might be able to help...

I am friends with my art teacher, amung many other teachers. I think that as long as you respect them, find a way to enjoy their class and make yourself do weel and express yourself, you'll do just fine!

One word of warning though, don't be a suck-up. teachers (i know this because my mom is a teacher) hate suck-ups. she says it automatically flips a swicth that turns her off that that person and just has them a student, and she says they are really annoying....
