Why didn't you just take the old one out and bring that one in to get the correct replacement?

can't help but think that maybe it didn't ruin the motor. worse case scenario would be if you put plugs that are just way to long and possibly broke or cracked the top of the piston. assuming you didn't crossthread the plugs going in there should be no reason for them not to come back out. i think it's possible that either you didn't gap the plugs properly, or you put in plugs that a littl;e bit too long ( went too far into the combustion chamber and when the piston came up to top dead center it hit the plug just hard enough to close the plug gap. with the gap wrong or closed they can't fire, either because the gap is too far for the spark to jump or the gap is closed and the spark has no air gap to allow the spark to arc across . this spark is what ignites the fuel/air mixture to create the explosion that drives the piston back down. since you said it was running before albeit rough, i think you should again try to remove the plug or plugs and start again. different engines sometimes need different plugs and the auto parts store should be able to give you the right plugs providing you give them the right information about your particular make and model engine. if your engine sits outside in the rain sometimes it's possible there could be some water in the tank. inthat case you can drain it or put a little bit of methanol in it and that should dry it right up. moisture would make it run rough as would old stale gas.

About the only way for a sparkplug to harm an engine is if it's electrode is too long and it hits the piston. Don't think that will happen though.
