I live in an older home. Since we moved in I have always wanted to remove the carpeting from the bathrooms for the very reason of what happened today. The toilet overflowed and left the carpeting in the bathroom soaked. It goes swish-swish when you walk on it. We just had not gotten around to replacing the carpeting with tile yet! I am using damp rid and keeping fans on it, but what else can I do? It does not seem like there has been any progress with my methods in over 12 hours. HELP!!! (Thanks!)

First should have gone to Kroger and rented a steam cleaner.
These things work great for sucking up the water.

Now though you really need to pull up the carpet and throw away and pad underneath. Replace the pad and reinstall the carpet (if desired).

By pulling up the carpet you might find a nice floor underneath or you could replace the flooring with tiles from the Home Depot or Lowes. Peel and stick tile makes a nice bathroom and you can easily do it yourself.

Good luck

Your going to have to pull the carpet out, to dry it. The carpet will start to smell from the underlying pad and from the embedded dirt. The carpet will get hard and won't dry, I've seen this time and again.

You can try and dry it your way but, I'll guarantee you, it won't work. Get or rent a shop vac and pull all the water you can out, then pull the carpet back including the inlaying pad, it's going to take days but, it's also going to reek.

Use a shop vac or a carpet cleaner with no water in it. The carpet cleaner would pry work the best.

If you don't own a carpet cleaning machine, you can rent one.
