Sedimentation is when things settle to the bottom. This is common in rivers when it goes from being narrow and fast moving to being broader and slower. When the river is moving quickly, it erodes away at the dirt in the riverbank. Then, as the water slows down because the terrain is not as steep, the dirt and rocks being carried by the river settle to the bottom. Over time, layers of dirt and rock pile up on top of each other. This is sedimentation.
Don't think it only happens in rivers. It happens in oceans and in forests as well -- anywhere where layer after layer of material is deposited on the ground.
You can see the results of sedimentation when you see what is called sedimentary rocks. Have you ever been somewhere where you saw that the rocks had been tilted up by earthquakes? The rocks have definite layers to them, which you could easily see by the parallel lines in them and the different colors of rock.
