1 Sedimentary Rocks

Conditions have to be just right or a fossil to form in rock. The organism or trace of the organism must be preserved before it decomposes or disappears. Rock fossils form in sedimentary rock. The sediment builds up around animal and plant remains, which can leave fossils in the rock. If sedimentary rocks are changed by heat or pressure (metamorphic rocks), their fossils can be destroyed. Igneous rocks never contain fossils. The heat of the molten rock - from which igneous rocks cools - destroys any traces of plants or animals.

Fossils, as indications of former life, can be found in all rocks. Fossil shells can be found in low grade metamorphic rocks and ancient footprints (also classified as fossils) have been found in lava rock (igneous). However because of the severe deformation found in metamorphic and igneous rocks, fossils are most commonly found in sedimentary rocks.
