I just got a new fish tank and it is about ten gallons large, and I did not know whether I needed an aeration system for it, like the plant-air things that are at petco, or if that was unnecessary.

As long as you have a filter on the tank an aeration system of any type is really not needed at all. You can add them if you like the way they look but no need to add one as the filter will create all of the water movement needed for proper aeration.

It really depends on what kind of fish you have in it, and how many fish. In my experience, bettas don't really need or like aeration systems. The only filter/aerator I've found that by betta seems to tolerate well is an air/powered filter, and despite being eir-powered it does not make bubbles in the water or on the surface, but it still keeps the water moving. Typically, though, you do need soe sort of aeration in an aquarium that size - I even recommend it for smaller tanks. If anything, a larg aquarium that is not heavily stocked will be all right without an air pump, but I'd still rather be safe than sorry and use a pump.

Also, a filter is very important to keep the water quaility high. Make sure you choose one that has multiple forms of filtration - biological filtration is very important, and I like biowheels the best.

All you really need for aeration is to break the surface of the water. Usually, if you have a filter that hangs on the back of the tank, the water coming back into the tank is enough to break the surface. Tiny little waves are plenty. Air-stones with air pumps do add pretty bubbles and make the little diver-man go up and down, and if that is you're thing, go for it. It's not really needed. As the previous post commented on, a power-head will also help with aeration, especially if the outlet is aimed up to splash out at the surface. Again, if you have a hang on the back filter, you're good.

if you have a good filter it will provide aeration -- that and make sure you change about 25% of the water weekly. the bubble stones just make pretty bubbles. not sure what a plant-air thing is?
