I am thinking about chosing law as my profession. I have looked up many things and can not find anything that tells me the types of lawyers and what exactly they do. I think that i would either like to be some kind of prosecuter or a lawyer that specialized in home cases. Such as abused children and child wellfare. If someone could give me a link to something that could help me or discribe exactly what i would be doing with the types that i have mentioned above. Thank you.

It sounds like you would be interested in working in the area of Child Advocacy Law, which deals with child custody issues, child abuse issues, and adoption. During undergrad, pursue opportunities to work with a Family Service organization, or work in some aspect of social work, as this will give you exposure to the types of situations you would be dealing with as a Child Advocate lawyer. In doing so, you can gain a deeper understanding of the issues that arise in family matters, which is the basis for family law/child advocacy.

Here is a link for a Child Advocacy Law course description: http://www.law.harvard.edu/academics/cap/courses/0506.php

Hi Theresa. I used to be in the legal profession. If you will enroll soon in a law school have a look at the curriculum. You will see there that law profession have lots of subjects which you need to pass and be good at; starting from Civil Law, Criminal Law, Commercial Law and Remedial Law. Under the Civil Law, there's family law, contracts and obligations, property law, etc. In commercial law there's Negotiable Instruments, Banking Laws, Corporation Laws, etc.

So you see, law is very broad. And all these subjects you need to pass. Then when you already pass the Bar / Licensure Examination for you to become a lawyer it will be all upto you on which area you want to focus. So if you want to specialize in family law/ home cases as you said, then you accept cases on family. You start specializing and LEARNING there. Legal profession is a continuous learning process.

Like doctors, lawyers do specialize.
I have a friend who will handle anything that comes through his door. A relative specializes in zoning and municipl law, and my own atty specializes in wills and estates.
It comes down to, what are they most nterested in,
