I hope you mean "awkward" silence I have never been awarded for my silence (although I have been told to shut up a lot =)

I will always attempt to break the silence by pointing out something in a way that makes it obvious that I'm only attempting to break the awkward silence (hey look a bird, that house i ugly, I like your shoelaces, which one of those two trees do you think weighs the most?) this usually does work but if it doesn't then you must just acknowledge the silence and rally for a new topic.

Awkward silence shouldn't feel all that awkward for you, it shouldn't make you nervous, since it's just as awkward for the the other person(s) and no one is just staring at you waiting for you to talk. Having said that, If you can break it first, you win and put others at ease, which makes them more inclined to have more frequent and meaningful conversations with you.

I prefer to look at them a comfortable silences. I hate it when someone I am with feels it necessary to jabber constantly. Sit back and enjoy the moment.

I smile and try to talk about something, something that interests the other person ( to get them talking ) if I know what they like. Of course stay away from politics and religion. lol
