This sounds like a dumb question but I guess I always said my eyes were Hazel growing up becasue that's what color my Mom told me they were... they are light brownish with green at the bottom & darker toward the top. I've heard a few people say that I have Hazel, light brown or some say I have dark brown eyes (usually people with light eyes, like my husbands family. So I'm sure to them they look really dark. In my family I have lighter eyes in comparison.) So the thing that threw me through a loop was the other day someone said they had Hazel eyes... this person had a green/blue color? What color range are considered Hazel? This isn't the first time I have heard this from a few people. This is so cofusing to me :P

What Color Is Hazel

I have always thought that I had brown eyes but some folks tell me that they're hazel. My eyes are a golden, reddish brown around my pupils with some dark olive green on the outer part. My husband had blue-green eyes that usually looked turquoise and my daughter has what I always called hazel - golden, reddish brown stars around the pupils but a true green around that.

My dad had eyes that some folks called hazel too but they were really a mixture of so many colors that you couldn't define them. My dad's eyes were a mixture of gray, reddish brown and dark olive green. Human eye color is actually genetically so complex that except for dark brown or pale blue, eye colors are often a mixture of several colors and seem to change color in different lighting.

Hi everybody. The truth is it is very hard to find real "hazel eyes" on a person. Hazel eyes are very rare. Pure hazel eyes have a deep brown iris with an amber-ish golden color along the border with a tiny bit of green. The golden color and little bit of green color can make a green tint in the eye making them look like a bright green. Hazel eyes can change from a light golden brown color, a light green color, to a deep brown color. Hoped this helped, bye!

I also have hazel eyes (because my hazel-eyed mother always defined them as such); I've since realized that hazel is an ambiguous brown-dark green shade/combination.

Of great bvalue, I've learned, is that when I'm dating a woman, if she says I have green eyes it usually means she likes me; if she says brown, not so much; if she says hazel it's probably because she knows about hazel(either from family member, partner, or herself having such)

Hazel eyes are actually the most misunderstood eye color. First of all, they are a medium mixed color - brown with small lighter admixtures but only certain admixture, not just any. They fall on the Scale right down the middle between the lightest blue to cole black. And hazel eyes are light to deep brown in color. If you've ever seen a "brown-eyed person" "claim" to have hazel eyes and reacted with, "they look brown to me" that's because hazel eyes ARE brown eyes . . . with a twist . . . a golden, reddish twist.

There's a modern North American misconception about hazel eyes. Pure hazel eyes are only golden brown and/or reddish brown. Pure hazel eyes have a deep brown iris with small or significant gold amber and/or red/orange specks throughout the iris with some eyes having slight green specks and/or a dark green outline (circle) around the iris. Also there may be a gold amber and/or red/orange ring around the pupil. What hazel eyes could never be is a blue, grey or significant green mix with brown. This has been known for centuries in Europe and its colonies. However, over the last century, people in North America began misusing the term "hazel" by inaccurately calling any mixed eye color hazel.

Here are some examples of what true hazel eyes are;

Hazel eyes are brown and green combined. One might show up more than the other color depending on what you are wearing.
