Yes, you would still be able to walk if it were broken- although it would not be comfortable to wear shoes. It's also no big deal whether it's broken, sprained or just bruised because there is nothing they can do about it anyway. You can't cast a toe. If it were broken badly enough to be hanging at an odd angle, then they could surgically reset it and put you in an orthopedic shoe- but otherwise there just is not real good treatment. You can help the pain with heat and keeping off the foot as much as you can, and propping it up when you can. Some folks find buddy taping the toe to it's neighbor helps, some don't. It's just amazing how much a little pinky toe can hurt when you hit it, and just not a lot you can do for it. Sorry. The bruising may increase over the next day and don't be surprised if it turns purple. It will gradually improve over the next week or so, and you will be in less discomfort. Meantime, keep it up when you can, keep off it as you can, and wear flip flops or sandals until it's comfy in a closed toe shoe again.

Yes, it can be broken. The bones in your baby toe are 1/4th of an inch long (there are 3 bones in that small space!); so they are very tiny and breaking one will not impact walking like breaking your ankle would. That being said, the treatment is always the same for any bruised and / or broken toe. First, put a gause or cotton pas between you 4th & 5th toe for padding and then tape the two together for support. Then ice & elevate and wear a very comfortable, supportive shoe; try to minimize walking if at all possible (you can even get crutches). If broken, it can take up to 6 weeks to heal.

hey... I know going to the doctor really sucks. i hate it too, and it actually makes me so nervous that I sometimes think i would almost rather bear the pain of whatever injury or illness i have rather than the anxiety of going to the doctor to treat it! LOL. so, I know where you're coming from. your little toe could be broken, but usually with toes, they can't obviously cast them or anything, so you don't need to worry about that. it might help just to go see a doctor... maybe they'll tape it for you or they'll probably just reassure you that you sprained it or something and it might just hurt for a while but its nothing to worry about. leave it today, and if it feels WORSE or the same tomorrow, call up your doctor's office and ask to just make a 10 minute appointment. then when you go away you won't have to worry about it! good luck-- I hope it feels better. don't worry too much, ok? ciao!

The only way to tell if the toe is broken to get a x-ray. Please go to your nearest podiatrist for an evaluation. You can walk with a broken toe but that doesn't mean it's NOT broken. You'll likely be given a small fracture shoe and taught how to buddy splint the toe (wrapping the injured toe to the toe next to it). Until then, ice and Advil/Aleve for the pain and swelling and wear a stiff-soled flat shoe until you see the doctor.

If you can wiggle it, it is probably not dislocated, but the only way to tell if the bone is cracked is with an xray. You can walk with a broken toe, painfully, but it is highly unlikely that you can wiggle it if it is dislocated at the joint. If you can wiggle it, tape it to the toe next to it and go on. that's about all they will do at the Doc anyway. If it is dislocated, you probably wouldn't be able to withstand the pain of resetting it and will have to do the Doc.

my daughter just recently broke her little toe and another bone connected to the little toe. she was told to elevate her foot and do not put pressure on it at all for a week or so. she also needed to "buddy wrap" her toes (use medical tape and put the pinkie toe along with the 2 toes next to it together and tape them fairly tight) take pain meds as needed.
Good luck

HELLO,
IN A CASE LIKE THIS THERE'S NOT MUCH TO DO. WRAPPIND THE FOURTH TOE TO THE PINKY AND NOT EXERTING YOUR FOOT FOR A WEEK OR TWO SHOULD BRING IT BACK TO SHAPE. SORRY THIS HAPPENED, YOU WILL BE OK.
