Besause it's a common misconception in our society of lies and extremes that the penis has to be large to provide sufficient pleasure for the woman.
Size is at best a psychological sexual factor. It's all in how you use it. Orgasm is triggered by stimulation of the clitoris. There is an elusive "G spot" inside the vagina as well, but there are several positions you can assume during sex to come into contact with it.
Most women who actually care about size that you'll find (like 99.9%) are very shallow.

Thank you! Though it was almost hard to find this question in the maze of "my penis is 11 1/2 inches. am i small?" dumbass questions.
I think half of the people on Yahoo Answers just make up obscene sizes for the sake of posting the question. Contrary to what their schoolteacher told them, there is such a thing as a dumb question.
And in the offline world, because of a few reasons. First of all, it's competitive: you want to "beat" your friend by having a bigger penis -- in the same spirit that you want to be able to lift more weight or run farther. Second, I think it's an area where men are comfortable being superficial. They think it's too effeminate to be concerned about how their legs look or their facial tone, but dick size is a perfectly manly thing to be concerned about ;-). Lastly, I think because small penises can be bad. I'm not saying everyone needs a 9 incher on 'em (in fact anything over 7 seems excessive), but if it's under 5, it could be problematic.

All this anxiety about penis size is porn driven. They see the digitally-enhanced monster organs on porn actors and then look down and think something is wrong with their perfectly normal penis. They aren't mature enough to separate fantasy (porn) from reality (what a normal penis actually looks like).

Same reason women worry about how big their breasts are, how big/small/flat/round their *** is, how wide their hips are, the look/smell/shape/etc. of their vagina etc.
Self consciousness. We know that certain parts of the body hold an element of arousal and so for some reason we think we have to get an A+ in all of them, when the truth is, in a loving relationship you aren't even getting graded.

People don't. Only men do. And they do because it is a macho thing to have a big penis, even though we all know it's how well you use what you have no matter the size.
