Well here is the scoop. The battery goes dead after a couple of hours of riding. The bike has been rebuilt and runs well. but as soon a the battery gets weak the funs over.. I wish I new more about the electrical working of a bike, I'm just itching to ride.. I've replaced the refractor and regulator with a solid state unit and have checked and confirmed that the stater is putting out juice. Things I noticed are that the main wire that runs from my battery up to my ignition gets warm to almost hot.. I've checked all my connections and believe all of the grounds. The blinkers where taken of before I owned the bike and the other day I was going to put some small LAD lights in the back but was unable to get them to work and the tail light will only come on when you step on the brake.. Not sure if wires got crossed some where's or posable a relay unit has gone bad.?? I'm at a loss of how to check. help

Hi me again-- Yep My starter is in good working condition and it's putting nice juice out. About 14.5 just what the manual says it should. O and did I mention that it has a new battery?

Purchase a shop manual before they go out of print.

You might have to go back to the OEM reg/rec because it's calibrated for that bike.
If the battery is to weak to hold a charge, the charging system of the bike may not be adequate to keep the bike running.
Remove the battery and give it a full charge.
Put a volt meter on it. if the volts start dropping, buy a new battery.
Test the specific gravity of the electrolyte with a hydrometer to check the battery's state of charge.
If that sounded like a foreign language, then that's why you should own a shop manual.

Edit:
I just happened to come back to this question.
I'm not sure of the wiring on that bike.
Honda - the brushes get their power from the reg/rec.
If your bike is the same, the after market reg/rec might not be wired for that.
If the engine cover is damaged in any way (bike fell over, cover scratched, bike was in a crash) the brushes will be mis-aligned and not charge the rotor (electromagnet).
The rings on the rotor may need cleaning (contact/brake cleaner or scotch brite pad).
Did you check the "AC voltage" output of the stator? Check it at the stator connector with the bike running.

he is right check the battery if bad replace hopefully its that simple. if the battery checks good you need to check your brushes on your alternator. they are suppose to be 9/16 of an inch long. replacement length is 1/4 inch long also check your brush springs they will go weak on you as well. the big thing that you need to know is what model you have (example is it a xs650b or a xs650d and so on there are 7 different wiring diagrams for the xs650 line. one thing they all have in common is that the tail light wire is blue so trace that back to see if you have a short or bad connection. good luck and ride on!

Now, till now commencing on the carbs you should come to a decision overall performance or economic device.they Mike's Xs could have innovations for .each and each for jetting out the carb.. next order a kit from Mike's Xs. that have the o-jewelry for the needle seat and new needle and gaskets The jets are much less high priced so new ones isn't that plenty. If that's been lagging perhaps identifying to purchase 2 of the needles could help if it has multi slots. purchase a gallon of Berrymen (walmart) or different Carburetor cleanser. Disassemble the carbs and allow them to soak for a pair of days. . Use the Chem 14 spray cleanser to be sure you have each and all of the Berrymen Carb cleanser off of the carbs aspects If that's been lagging perhaps identifying to purchase 2 of the needles could help if it has multi slo in case you choose for to no longer replace any element verify you have a brass brush and a gem clip available to port through the jets there are a pair of rebuilding primers on. xs650 cental and storage. oh yeah you're construction 2. you will 2 kits 2 jets severe and low 2 needles etc and get you a gas clear out approximately 2-3 dollars to maintain any crap in tank out of the carbs after construction. Use Iridium plugs will upload approximately 2 hps to motorcycle ok&N filters approximately 80 funds and the spark could be susceptible get new coils and wires for it.

we had the same trouble with a chopper we built check the brushes in the charging system. If that's not it beef up your ground wire. Good luck Chris
