If you're looking for a way to do this for your own business, you might want to look into services that provide you an online shopping cart (Yahoo does this among many others). This lets you manage inventory, handle user profiles, all sorts of different features.

If you're trying to code such a thing from the ground up, you'd better do some research. Start by learning what the accounting rules are for such a system, then maybe explore how other such systems are put together. You'd probably want to look at both the high-level stuff (the basics of how such systems are put together, what kind of things such systems consist of) and the low-level (the programming language[s] used to code them, what kind of system-specific stuff you can choose from and use, etc.).

If all of this is way over your head, consider finding yourself an IT consultant or website design company that specializes in this sort of thing. You will probably have to pay a lot initially but you won't have to worry about the nuts and bolts and setting everything up.

If you don't want to pay a whole lot for a service - and you already have hosting and a domain name, go to templatemonster.com - they have tons of websites for like $150 that come with a shopping cart installed, plus you don't have to worry about designing it or integrating it - you just download from their website, upload it to your hosting environment - and customize it how you like. I recommend ZenCart.

If you're not looking for a shopping cart, but something more custom - like specifically built for your website alone - you will either need to learn a programming language or hire a developer - which can be expensive - my company charges $85 an hour for that type of work. Depends on which you'd rather invest - time or money.
