Boredom.
Helplessness.
Hopelessness.
All of those things tie in with a person's self esteem and self identity.
Being able to have your needs met first, and then having some positive motivating factors are very important.
That said, I think it also has to do with perception, predisposition and resilience. It is up to each individual to decide what to do with their life, regardless of the circumstances and there are no hard and fast rules. It seems like people often thrive or fail regardless of their circumstances.

Metabolism is controlled by how much exercise we do every day. No exercise, low metabolism, low attitude toward life.
