we had them in early grade school. the bathroom monitor would take them away if we caused trouble or talked in the restroom. but on the way back to the room we'd pass by our lunchboxes on the wall, where some of the more savvy kids would just take off saved stars from the plastic containters and walk back without the teacher knowing that they were ever taken away.

No I went to a private school and we were taught to not be rewarded that way. That are success was our only reward.
