Sometimes it is obvious, but an x-ray is the only way to know.

Most ankle fractures are painful enough you can't walk on them but I see maybe 10% than can bear weight and walk with pain.
Swelling is more indiciative of a fracture than anything else. Peoples pain tolerance varies quite a bit so you really can't go by pain alone.

The only to tell if something is broken is on x-ray. Whether you can stand on it or move it or walk on it is not the best indicator. There are plenty of people who walk on broken bones all the time and not know that their bones are broken. Please go see your nearest podiatrist for a x-ray. If it is confirmed broken, you will need a cast and crutches and will likely be off your foot for a minimum of 6 weeks. If it's not, you'll probably get a walking boot for 4-6 weeks. Hope this helps answer your question.

Usually severe pain, esp. on attempts to bear weight, but you really need to have a Dr. look at it. When I was 12 I broke my ankle in soccer practice and walked on it for three days.

You won't be able to stand on it.No weight bearing whatsoever and you need to go to a hospital for xrays and cast. How do I know? Well, a few years ago a nice little old lady, rather heavy, was ridding along on her motor scooter at a good pace. The dear ran me over! yes, I've been run over by a Granny. I had tire trends up my other leg as she wouldn't take her hand off the key. Did I mention she flung her purse and it hit me on my knees skinning, @ bruising them? Well, the end of this is She broke my ankle. To this day when I see someone coming towards me on a scooter , I put up my hands and run screaming for my life. Good luck on your ankle.(grin) A true story silly as it sounds.

HELLO,
THERE IS PAIN ON TOUCHING IT, AND ANY ATTEMPT TO PUT YOUR WEIGHT ON IT WILL BE EXCRUCIATING. AN E-RAY WILL CONFIRM A FRACTURE.
SPRAINS ARE SOFT TISSUE INJURIES AND DO NOT SHOW ON X-RAYS.
