Get a crappy fiat, then you won't feel too bad when you have your first bumps and scratches,( although i never did that, of course!)

In terms of insuramce, it is going to be expensive.

Therefore get a reliable car, not a flash one, the smaller the engine size the better (don't go above a 1.4 but ideally go for a 1.0 or 1.2). An older car will be cheaper but for peace of mind I would get a new car - it is worth paying the extra if you can afford it. Bear in mind that if you are 17 when you take out the insurance you will have to pay it all in one go as you cannot pay monthly installments until you are 18, and if it is your car the insurance has to be in your name.

My personal recommendation is a Ford Ka or a Vauxhall Corsa - something of that size is fairly cheap, good for insurance and looks decent too.

You would be better off getting a Yaris or Micra, japanese are probably the most reliable on the road and least expensive to run or repair, the Peugeot Volkswagen and Citroen are popular but can be expensive for repairs, Nissan can take a lot of abuse and still keep going, good luck with driving !!!

Its up to you there are lots of cars 5 ,6,7,8 years old or older that have low mileage and will run long time. As long as the mileage is good and car is clean . All that matters is cost and if you like it.
I have had all of the more or less the 200000 mile Cavaler, Malibu's,escorts ,focus ,Mazdas,Toyotas ,honda . Just remember the inports may be less prone to repair . But and American made will be way cheaper in parts .
I like to get them with between 40000 and 90000 will run till you are ready to up grade.

A `99 or `00 Chevy Cavilier would be great as a first car.
Great on gas and zippy without being a fast car. My daughter
learned to drive on one and loved it. Now she will be 18 in
July and drives a Dodge Stratus.

Buy something very cheap.

Get a friend who knows something about driving to check it out and make sure it's not a complete pup, but that's it.

You're not going to know what you want until you've had some experience driving.

Ford Ka, is not a bad choice, 1.3 litre engine fairly comfortable, not a boy/girl racer car, but not one for the retired (Micra, anybody?)
