What you have to do is to keep your hands busy so that you don't have a chance to light up.

The answer is very clear. You must become a marathon juggler. Juggle all day long until you black out and when you wake up resume your marathon juggling.

As per my experience ,I feel one should develop some other interests in things such as sports / music / singing /dancing / yoga / meditation or making new friends .The only way one can stop smoking totally with any withdrawal symptoms is by making your self busy other wise ,like mentioned above.Chewing gum / mint are all temporary .
Apart from all the above your self affirmation that you do want to stop smoking is a must and will help you get rid of the habit of smoking faster and without any other side effects
Yes you should sincerely try and say these words at least ten times a day along with the other activities .Wishing you all the luck in reaching your goal of quiting smoking

Before ANYTHING ELSE, try Allen Carr's ''easyway'' book [try ebay, amazon forgot the spelling of his first name]. He says NOT to use the nicotine remedies because you're still pumping the drug directly into your system and will NEVER get rid of the addiction long term or stop OR will go back to smoking after you have stopped. Those remedies aren't necessary. Try the book FIRST and if that fails you can always try anything else, but it's not the way to stop. Carr's books are number one sales of Penguin publishing for 20 years, they originated in England and it's also what all the celebrities use, and doesn't even cost more than the price of the BOOK, with a money back guarantee for even that! Do yourself a favor and try the natural way...... AND don't gain weight either. All the answers above will make you fat as a horse, and especially aren't the answer for Diabetics or pre-diabetics, or even dieters either. There is NO oral substitute for a cigarette long term that won't kill you another way [obesity, etc]. Read the BOOK.

I think when u stop smoking u need to keep busy, such as doing sports like play squash with a friend to get rid of the anger etc...or chew gum or strong mints as they make the mouth feel so minty u won't like to smoke...& also have some tic-tac etc...I am a woman so knitting helps me & keeps my hands busy but u could get worry beads which u count & is supposed 2 b calming.
One thing I have learnt which is very powerful to kick the habit is repeating an affirmation. You could say: I am willing to releaese the need for smoking..this really works, I read about it in Louise L Hay's book: You Can Heal Your Body, who is a very respected author on metaphysics.

I have used the new drug called Chantix and i have completly stoped smoking. It is a bit spendy but if you are willing to quit it is almost the same price as smokes. I liked too about the program that I had online support and support numbers I could call anytime I got the urge. I hardly had the urge because of the medicine. I think it was more a habit for me than me really needing one anymore. I would try it though.

Chewing gum might help. Nowadays there's also the nicotine gum option or the patch. Also, don't tempt yourself, try to stay away from places where a lot of people are smoking and try to avoid stores that use Salem ads as wallpaper. Congratulations on quitting by the way.

I just quit after 7 years of smoking. I replaced it with lolly pops and popcicles. It's been extremely hard but well worth it. I can smell and breath better. I tried the gum and it's really gross and didn't help me at all, it tastes like a peppery mint gum.

I just quit smoking in April, it wasn't as hard as I figured it would be. When I was out of cigs. I just bought the "Commit Lozenges" in cherry flavor, they didn't taste to great at first, but everytime i craved a cigarette i used one of those, plus i stocked up on suckers and hard candy. After about a week i didn't want a cigarette anymore. I smoked a cigarette a week ago and it tasted horrible, i put it out right after i lit it. havent wanted one since.
