Guess the answers somewhat proved your point. The Stanley Cup IS NOT THE NHL'S PRIZE. It is in possession of a Board of Trustees. They are to decide which HOCKEY TEAM deserves it each year. They have basically put it on permanent loan to the NHL. They decided the NHL has the BEST hockey team each year and so that team gets the award. I guess that is fair enough now since the rest of the leagues have their own prize.

First off , the "Trustee's" bring the cup to the Ice, and Bettman presents it cause he's the NHL's Commisioner.....and what do you mean by making it clear that it's not just the NHL's prize to give? Who else is giving this cup away? I'm not sure what your getting at, but the whole process couldn't be more clear. It's just like almost every professional sport.
And having the Captain from the previous winner hand it over? Come on this is NOT GOLF. These are VERY VERY competitive people, you think Rod Brind'amour whose Hurricanes did not make the playoffs after winning the cup last season wants to hand over the cup? Are you all crazy? And let's say that the Ducks played the Hurricanes this year in the finals instead of Ottawa. The Ducks win, and Brind'amour has to come out and hand it over? Man your all way off point, this isn't a circus , it's a professional sport not a spelling bee or hot dog eating contest.

Because sadly he is the Commissioner.
Buttman is the most irritating Commissioner the NHL has ever had and he should do us all a favour and retire.
He sounds and is a pompous little *** who really doesn't know very much about the game.
He said Anaheim was the first team from the West coast to ever win the Stanley Cup which of course was totally wrong since the were old teams from Vancouver and Seattle that had won it in the early 1900's.
He should have had one of his flunkies look it up for him before he went on national television and made a fool of himself.

I agree with everyone who made an anti-Bettman remark. In his tenure, the league and the game have sufferd immensely. He's a joke. He doesn't deserve the right to even touch the Cup. The Ducks winning makes him look good only because they were an expansion team he brought in.
To answer your question, i don't know why he presents it. Maybe they should have the Captain of the previous year's team hand it over. Anything would be better than Bettman.

Amdd, um with a three-0 lead over your loved one Sabres, i might say going to the Stanley Cup Finals might incredibly be "close to" the cup. I comprehend faith and help, yet now you're basically being pathetic and dumb. recover from it. it is going to likely be Sens and Detroit, with Detroit having the ease. and that i'm partial to neither team, nicely Detroit is my #2. yet another exciting stat: previous 4 years, the Stanley Cup has long gone to a a million or 2 seed, which that could help Detroit for the win.

I completely agree with Tripod, the previous winning teams captain should definantly hand it down, i had never thought of it that way, bettman (small case for a reason) is an absolute joke, and should be disposed of properly, i will not mention what "properly" means because this answer will most likely be flaged and removed, because, yeah, its that bad.

Because Gary Bettman is the NHL Commissioner, and what do you mean by "wasn't just the NHL's prize to give?" Who else then?

Bettman looked like a fool handing it out. Also, what does it say with all the boo-birds when he came out? The man is hated by fans, he should step down for the good of the game.
"It's OK, I come bearing a gift" he says. Pathetic. He says the fans are the most important thing, if he believed this, he would just step down.

well, the trustees brought it out, but it is the chairman of the NHL who presents it. I think it was funny the scott tried to yank it away before the picture was taken.

Uh it goes to the NHL Champion team... thus it is the NHL's prize to give.
And he presents it because he is (unfortunately) the commisioner, you know, the guy in charge of the NHL.
