I have a 1996 Nissan Sentra. the pulley right next to the alternator is kinda loose. im talking about the pulley which is a couple of inches away from the alternator. does anyone know what its called. and if its loose could it make a sound. it moves a bit when i shake it with the hand. this part is hard to describe. i know that the belt goes around the alternator and under this pulley. its located little bit to the left but a bit lower to the alternator. does anyone know what its called?.. please help.

it sounds like an idler pulley or adjuster pulley.

Sounds like the Idler pulley. If so, this pulley is there to create tension on the entire system so that the belt stays tight.

Can you tell if it is spring loaded?

It should'nt be loose. None of the pulleys should be loose. Yes it will make noise if it's loose. It's not very expensive to replace, nor does it take very long.

kragens web site shows pictures of a lot of parts. Sounds like the idler if is not connected to anything but the block.
