Actually the Linksys routers are great and usually work right out of the box. Plug it in and your set. I use a Linksys WRT54G...a very popular model.

I presume you have a dynamic IP from your ISP.
Procure a router that has a decent manual. If you cannot understand the manual you cannot help yourself.
Connect the router WAN port to the modem. Check with the manual as some require a straight and others require a cross cable.
Even though you wish to comunicate wirelessly, connect your pc to the router using a cable. Again check whether you need a cross or a straight cable. Make sure your wired network connection is set to obtain an ip address automatically.
Power off the modem for 0.5 minutes and turn it on. Wait about 0.5 minutes and turn on your router. After the router has warmed up, open command prompt on your pc (start - run, and then type in cmd and hit enter). In command prompt, type in "ipconfig" without the quotes and hit enter. You should see your LAN IP, subnet mask, and default gateway. If you do, great! The LAN IP is probably in the form 192.168.x.y where x is 0 or 1; y is any number from 2 - 255. If you do not have a LAN IP, review your cable connections and port settings because you cannot proceed without this working. Write back telling us what you did if it does not work.
Assuming it is working, open Internet Explorer and enter the default gateway ip address into the address bar. Follow router manual from here to log in. Configure WAN for a dynamic IP address. Configure LAN to provide LAN IP addresses via DHCP. I would limit the LAN to no more than 50 IP addresses.
Follow all directions for security (including preshared key, and MAC address validation for wireless). Of course, be sure to change the ssid from the factory default and change the password.
Make sure you have internet connections and can surf the net with a wired lan connection. Once this is the case, go to the router's web site and download the latest firmware for your router and update it if it does not have the latest.
Now configure all wireless ports of all wireless pcs to work with the router and you are done.
To securely configure a wireless home grade router for a single pc is about 2 hours. Short cuts herein are security risks and I do not recommend it.
Of course, write if you have a problem and tell us what you did and where you got stuck.

I've been working on computers for over 10 years, and accept my limitations. When I need this type of work done, I call on the pros. In my town we have a company called "PC Housecall." It may cost a few dollars but it was worth it. When the tech left, my three PCs were networked, cleaned hard drive and inside the case, and good to go.
