Uhg. Well, I love my laptop but it's a little old. Windows 98 but I had it updated to Windows XP. Well anyways, I used to be able to watch dvds on it but now it says I don't have the proper decoder, and then it takes me to a site that has plug ins that you can buy. Dx Is there anyway to make it so that I can play my dvd on it without buying that stuff? (I'm using windows media player right now)

It would depend on what codec it is asking for. If it is asking for a 'divx' codec, simply download the free codec from DivX. Just Google search DivX codecs, and it will take you to the site.
However, if it is an actual DVD in DVD format, it may be much more complicated. What exactly is it asking for? Let me know and I'll see if I can't help...

Try adding your tech-specs and I might give further details. Anyway, the problem sounds like you either don't have enough RAM to keep a playing DVD afloat in a media player (whether it be a pre-bundled DVD viewer or WMP), or you don't have the latest version of the codec you have to use to play a DVD. Judging from your problem, I would do both.

Your decoder isn't compatible with windows xp. Try google searching "DVD decoders for_____DVD Drives"( THE UNDERSCORES ARE THE MAKER OF YOUR DRIVE. Or something like that. You can download some codecs for dvd drives!
