Goldfish are horrible beginner fish. They may be cheap to replace but if you don't know what you are doing you will kill them easily. They are also really high maintenance because of the amount of waste/ammonia they produce. They also need at least ten gallons per goldie and are coldwater fish. In a five gallon aquarium the light on top will act as a heater. It will create a tropical environment which will make coldwater fish more susceptible to disease. Try community tropical. Kids like movement- they will find a Betta boring. Guppies, mollies, platys- all the live bearers need salt in their water. Without it they are much more likely to get sick. A smaller tank is much more difficult to keep stable. These two things are a bad combination- I would stay away from the live bearers. The general rule for community tropical fish is 1" of fish per gallon. You must take into account the fishes adult size. A nice option would be a school of small fish. They will move around a lot and are very pretty in groups. You could do 3 or 4 barbs. These get to be a little larger than danios so 3 or 4 would max out your tank. (if you put more fish into the tank then your small ecosystem can handle then nature will do her job and keep things in balance. She will kill some of your fish.) Another nice set up would 3 zebra danios and 2 cory cats. There are all sorts of danios- I think the zebras are the most attractive. Cory cats are cute little cat fish that stay small. How long should you wait? Did you add starter bacteria to the tank? The fish will need bacteria in the water to destroy the ammonia they produce. If you add fish to a sterile environment then they may die. You can always get one fish to cycle the tank. Then get the rest later. If you add a whole buch of fish at once then there will not be enough bacteria to keep up. Your fish are very likely to die. Do a search on cycling n aquarium, nitrogen cycle. Along the same lines- water changes. When you do a water change on an aquarium you must be conservative. The fish need those bacteria if you cahnge all the water or "clean" the gravel then you are removing the bacteria. Only change 25% of the water at a time and vacuum the gravel. NEVER remove more- even if it is really dirty. Wait a few days and then do another small water change. DON'T overstock your tank and you'll be just fine. Have fun and Good Luck!!! Oh- don't get an algae eater your tank is WAY too small. If anything get a small snail (you need to feed snails too- they like romaine lettuce)

Pleco in a 5 Gallon, are you kidding? Those grow to easily 12" - 18" long in a short time.Besides that you might be able to get 4 neon tetras, thats about it.

goldfish can grow big enough to need a 30 to 50 gallon tank, (my friend has 3 adults in a 30 gallon tank!) to the person who thinks gold fish never grow are completely wrong, they can be a mammoth of a fish. lol. a few fuppies, a betta can be there too. That is all.

Stick with the inch of fish per gallon of tank rule. Otherwise you are going to get a build up of nitrogen and ammonia...which is bad. So think small fish.

Okay, I have betta's in a tank. males are extremly aggressive towards each other, but are peaceful around other fish. I have in a tank one male and three females, and a pleco. just remeber, you need at least two females.

GOLDFISH UNLESS YOU HAVE A FILTER AND HEATER, TROPICAL FISH NEED HEATED WATER. THE BASIC RULE IS 1 GALLON TO AN INCH OF FISH SO YOU CAN'T GET MANY IN A 5 GALLON .
