Hurt - Nine Inch Nails

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of ****
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end

You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

Or maybe...

I'm going to stop pretending that I didn't break your heart - Eels.

I'm gonna tell you what you need to hear
And i'm a little too late
By three or four years
And it may not make much sense
Now that we are apart
But i'm going to stop pretending
That i didn't break your heart

You see i never thought enough of myself
To realize that losing me could mean
Something like the tears in your eyes
And i want to tell you i'm sorry
And it's too late to start
But i'm going to stop pretending
That i didn't break your heart

And it's christmas eve
Years down the line
Sitting here wishing i'd treated you better
When you were mine
And i have no way of knowing where you are
But i'm going to stop pretending
That i didn't break your heart

I didn't mean to hurt you
I didn't know what i was doing
But i know what i have done

BRIGHT EYES LYRICS

"Padraic My Prince"

i had a brother once
he drowned in a bathtub before he had ever learned how to talk
and i don't know what his name was but my mother does
i heard her say it once, padriac my prince i have all but died from the
sheer weight of my shame. you cried but no one came and the water filled your
tiny lungs. appear, my dear, and cry for me. it was six years ago today that
we laid you in your grave, your sweet young skin was shining then too.
and so tonight to celebrate i will poison myself.
another coughing, shaking fit in a bathroom that is spinning.
so i close the door and rest my head on the tile floor,
sickness and sleep turning me cold.
i am still not sure, is there some better place i could be heading towards?
where the selfishly sick and self absorbed are welcome.
i saw the future once.
i was drunk in a phone booth.
my eyes were wet and red but i could not tell what was said
and through the screams of the traffic voices carried saying
i am sorry
on a day so gray its black inside
watching churches on tv
in a coma you don't dream you just hope that someone sits with you
babies turn blue when they are ignored like the sky on summer days
before you turn and walk away it has changed you
so tonight to compensate i will poison myself
another coughing, shaking fit in a bathroom that is spinning.

Photo finish, and the answer is:
"Wreck on the Highway" from The River, Bruce's greatest 2-album release, done in 1980 I believe.

Thinking of him seeing that in Cat's Cradle after a night in the Dean Dome steal brings a tear to my eye.

A close second is "My Ride's Here" by Warren Zevon from his last album by the same name.

What is yours?

I don't know if its the saddest, but "While My Gutair Gently Weeps", is really beautiful and sad. Even more so when Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Prince, and George Harrison's son sang it in memory of Mr. Harrison.

"Lucky Man" by Emerson, Lake and Palmer is pretty gloomy. "Piano Man" by Billy Joel has a sad, lonely theme. But, "Shooting Star" by Bad Company takes the cake...so sad. Well, "Long Black Veil" (sung by a number of people, my favorite being the Band) is depressing as well.

Edit: I've changed my mind. It's two songs by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show..."Carry Me, Carrie" and "The Last Morning"

"Keep Me In Your Heart" was a song sung by Warren Zevon when he was dying from cancer. Very sad. He also did a version of "Knocking On Heaven's Door", which is beautiful.

I don't think this is the saddest I've heard but it is sad.

"The Older I Get," by Skillet.

Another sad song is "Hurt" by Johnny Cash, I know NIN sings a version but I haven't heard it.

"Who wants to live forever" by Queen.

It has a very special meaning to me since the day I heard Freddie Mercury died.
I saw a program about him on TV and it was the last song they played while they show the footage of him wearing a crown in Wembley.
Such a great man!
Such a talented person and entertainer!
I cried like a baby, as if he was a dear close friend.
I realized that even thou he never knew me, the fact that I was so sad with his departure was a proof that he didn't need to live forever.
He will always be remembered.
"This world has only one sweet moment, set aside for us"...
And I come to realize that his life produced great sweet moments in mine and for that I will always be thankful.

RIP, Freddie.
I love you.
