Right click on your Microsoft Windows XP "Start" and click on Properties... the Caption Title on the top of the Properties should say "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" and there is two tabs labelled "Taskbar" and "Start Menu" and you should be under the tab labelled "Taskbar".
There are two options stated underneith a picture of the desktop and Start and the two options are labelled "Start Menu" and "Classic Menu".
If my suspicions are correct your's will have Classic Menu checked which takes the name off the start menu.
You want Start Menu checked for your name to reappear.

Hmmmm....which start menu are you using? XP or Classic?
To check this, right-click on your taskbar choose "Properties>Start Menu" and make sure you have the "Start Menu" radio button selected. Then click "Apply" and "OK". When I did it, it my start menu changed to show my name immediately. I hope this helps.

Probably you loogged in Windows with as a different User, maybe Administrator. Go to Control Panel > Users Accounts and verify if nothing happened to your account.

1. Click on your little picture, if you have one. Or, click Start - Control Panel - User Accounts. Click on your account. If you clicked on your picture, click Back.
2. Click Change My Name.
Note: If this is on a corporate network, you probably can't do this.
