It is a small, portage storage device that plugs into a USB port on a computer. Once it is plugged in, it usually shows up as an additional disk drive, and you can it to save, edit, rename, delete, etc. for files. Once the files are saved on the flash drive, it can be unplugged from one computer and used on another, sort of like how floppy disks were once used back in the day, but where as floppies were generally limited to 1.44MB of information that they could store, flash drives generally come in sizes ranging from 256MB to 1GB (or possibly more, even though I have not personally seen one that was bigger than 1GB), so they are nice to have because you can move files that would normally be too big for a floppy disk (which makes them nice for students who have computer classes, or people who work in offices and need to takes files homes with them to access outside of work).

It's a drive that plugs into your USB port (the small rectagular hole in the front and back of your machine). Often they come in a variety of sizes and are great for storing private documents or backing up things. Some times they are called "thumb" drives.

they are commonly know as pen drives..

think of it like a hard drive on a stick, they come in lots of sizes from 128mb up to 8gb..

the insides are basically a memory chip which stores all the information you put on it. you plug it into a pc or a mac, and it see's it like it would see a camera, or the SD card etc within a camera, as a new drive. the one i bought the other day is smaller than a packet of chewing gum.

to give you an idea of their size, and what they look like >
