i usually use my laptop when before I go asleep to play video games on. i have it on my lap on top of my quilt. i always make sure it's ventilated by regularly holding it off the quilt and it never got hot before unless i had it on for ages. now it seems to be getting a bit hot quite quickly i've used it the same way for the last year and it has been fine. any idea why?

Laptops are very compact and need airing constantly, not regularly. Laptops take air in and out a lot more than desktops; laptops take a lot of air in and throw a lot out, with you having the quilt underneith it has caused backdraught (pushing air out and ending up having it bouncing off an inanimate object and back).

Computers gradually over time start losing performance and reliability and also fans get clogged up with dust particles etc etc...

In other words, try to keep it constantly ventilated and you could clean the fan, hopefully that will keep it cool. That is the only advice that I can give.

Try getting a bed tray, like for breakfast in bed?? It will be like having your laptop on a table or desk. Mine have always gotten hot quickly if on a pillow or smooshy quilt. I got myself a tray table I use for the couch....I'd think the bed tray would work the same! :)

I'll bet my 50 bucks, there are lots of fibers on the cpu heatsink and surrounding area. Air flow is now quite restricted. Have your laptop cleaned by a technician and never place it again on top of any that could restrict air flow or that could release anything like fibers.
