Watergate was the name of the hotel that Nixon's "staff" broke into-- which is what started the whole scandel.
Ever since then, any scandel seems to have -gate added to it, just to be cutesy.

Watergate was the first "gate" scandal, named for the Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC, where members of Nixon's administration were caught trying to break in to the Democratic National Party's HQ in 1972. Since then, -gate has been attached to names to indicate high-level political scandals.

Watergate was due to the name of the building the event took place, all the other "gate's" are just a reference to that original scandal.

Watergate was the name of the hotel that featured prominently in the scandal that brought down Richard Nixon... so now any time there is a big scandal they tack gate on the end of it...

It's a take on Watergate...it's generally a politically driven scandal. Or a scandal with some sort of ties to someone political.
