All of the above answers are right on. However, I was surprised that my main symptom was not the abdominal discomfort or the water breaking...(the doctor had to do that) but the severe and piercing back pain.

If you are asking because you are experiencing labor, then good luck and hang in there--it's worth it!

I don't know how easy it is to examine yourself and see how many centimeters dilated you are so I'd have to say contractions are the easiest way to tell. When you start having a few of them per hour that usually means you're in the first stages of labor. Most doctors will advise you to wait till your contractions are about 5 minutes apart before going to the hospital. But if your water breaks, then you should head to the hospital regardless of how far apart your contractions are. Lastly, as most mothers will tell you, you'll just know when you're in labor.

The most telling sign is the breaking of the water. You'll know when that happens. However, it is possible to get all the way through labor without this happening (in which case, they break them for you), so don't assume that you aren't in labor because it hasn't happened.

Basically, you'll begin to have labor pains, which consist of contraction of your muscles. Trust me, you'll know a labor pain when you feel it. Most doctors don't want you at the hospital until they are regular and about 5 minutes apart. But ask your doctor what he wants you to do.

Discomfort, back pain, bloody show, loss of mucus plug, cramps, frequent urination or bowel movements.

I was in labor all night with my son and I did not know it, my started hurting and I was getting mild cramps like I was getting my period. I also kept getting up like every hour or so to use the bathroom, I felt like I had to urinate constantly. Around 5 am on one of my numerous trips to the restroom - I noticed a big water rush and that there blood in the toilet bowl. My water had broke. Then the contractions started, they felt like terrible period cramps, then escalated to stomach punches.

The first signs of labor are the passing of the mucous plug and contractions. Passing of the mucous plug (aka your water breaking) is usually when most people decide to go to the hospital.

It is completely different for everyone. I didn't sleep for two days before my daughter was born, I had an amazing burst of energy.

Go to Ivillage.com and search for signs of labor and you will probably be amazed at some of the strange things that can indicate the beginning stages of labor.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!
